The Science of Laughter
Scientists have studied laughter and what they have found is no “laughing matter.”
Did you know…
…the study of laughter is called “Gelotology?”
…the average person laughs 13 times a day? Oddly enough, it’s not usually due to a joke, but rather something that happens.
…kids laugh more than adults?
…laughing is good for you? It not only burns calories but laughing first thing in the moring gives you a natural burst of energy.
What do you call a duck that gets all A’s? A wise quacker!
Some Animals Can Laugh
Animals have been amusing humans for thousands of years. However, we didn’t know that they may think we’re funny, too.
Marine scientists in Sweden have observed dolphins chuckling when playing. This sound is only emitted in roughhousing sessions, which leads the scientists to believe it’s all in fun.
Bonobo chimpanzees laugh when tickled. Just like us, this primate is sensitive under the armpits, the tummy, and the feet. It is thought that the quick panting sound the Bonobo emits helps them build relationships with one another.
Rats laugh when they are playing with each other (we just can’t hear it). These ultrasonic vocalizations are believed to originate in the same part of the rat’s brain as humans.
Elephants trumpet when socializing. They even play with sticks, ropes, bones, and rocks.
Some birds get a good “chuckle” out of teasing other animals. Crows have been observed pulling the tails of cats and dogs. A pet African Grey parrot would constantly imitate a whistle to confuse the family dog. He would then let out a wheezy laugh.
What kind of tree fits into your hand? A palm tree!
