Fun Father’s Day Facts – Did You Know?
Father’s Day is thought to have been started by Sonora Dodd of Spokane Washington on June 19th, 1910. Sonora was raised (along with her five siblings) by a single father. She thought since mom’s had Mother’s Day, dad’s should have their own day, too.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson wanted to make Father’s Day an official US holiday, but Congress didn’t agree.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge tried again, but the day still didn’t become a holiday. The main reason was because many people felt that Father’s Day was just so companies could make money from the sales of ties.
In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. The national holiday was finally signed into law in 1972 by President Richard Nixon.
