Storytime Sunday – Backpack Brittle

by, Melissa G. Christensen

“Hey, what happened to my snack?” said Ben. He pulled a sandwich baggie out of his animated-bag-and-purse-image-0030backpack. It looked brown, gooey and gross.

“Ew, what is that?” Ben’s friend Julian wrinkled his nose.

“It was my snack.” Ben frowned. “Chocolate chips, almonds, and rice cereal. Now I don’t know what it is!”

“It looks like the chips melted when it was in your backpack. I would just throw it away when we get off the bus,” Julian said.

animated-boy-image-0051It didn’t feel melted and gooey though. Ben tapped the bag. His snack felt solid, like a candy bar. He pried open the bag. The snack had morphed into the shape of the bag, flat and square. His hands didn’t get gooey though. The chocolate was completely solid. Ben noticed the rice cereal and almonds poking out of the chocolate in places.

“The chips melted and stuck everything together, but then got solid again!” Ben said.

“Cool!” said Julian. “It looks like my mom’s peanut brittle. Try it!”

Ben broke off two small pieces of the chocolate brittle. He handed a piece to Julian.

“Here goes…one, two, three!” They both crunched down on the chocolate creation.

“Mmm…this is really good!” Ben said. He crunched crunched away. “I just got some almonds and a ton of rice cereal in that bite!”

“I just got lots of almonds and rice cereal, too, and they taste awesome with the animated-boy-image-0025chocolate!” Julian said.

“We just made up a new yummy snack, Julian! And in my backpack!”

“We can call it Backpack Brittle! Let’s make this again, Ben.”

“We have to! Only, maybe next time, we make it in my kitchen, not in my backpack.”

The End!
