Today is the first day of Spring!
Let’s celebrate with some “springy” facts.
Did You Know?
- Spring is a symbol of rebirth. Plants begin to grow and the birds, bugs, and animals
will begin to have their babies.
- When we have Spring here in the Northern hemisphere, it is Autumn (Fall) in the Southern hemisphere. Australia is located in the Southern hemisphere.
- The first day of Spring is called the “vernal equinox.” Vernal is Latin for Spring and Equinox is Latin for “equal days.”
On the first day of Spring the sunrise and sunset are about 12 hours apart everywhere on Earth. The hours of daylight and night are almost equal.
The vernal equinox occurs when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is not facing towards or away from the Sun. This means the Sun is directly above the equator. As Spring goes on, the Earth’s axis starts to tilt more towards the Sun.
