Today is National Wiggle Your Toes Day!

In honor of this “toe-tastic” occasion, we encourage you to free your feet. Take off those shoes and socks and wiggle your toes.

Wiggle them in the sand, wiggle them in a lake, or a pool, or maybe even wiggle them in a puddle. Take your tootsies for a walk in the soft grass or on the pebbly ground. Give your feet and toes the freedom they deserve!

Every day the average person takes between 8,000 and 10,000 steps! Over a lifetime, that’s like walking around the world four times!

There are 26 bones in each foot. When we are born, these bones are mostly cartilage. The bones in our feet harden entirely by the time we reach the age of 21.

Humans started wearing shoes around 40,000 years ago!

There are nearly 8,000 nerves in our feet. This is why they can be so ticklish.

Warm, sweaty feet make a perfect home for bacteria, which feed on our dead skin cells, which in turn produce gases and acids – this is where that nasty foot smell comes from – they’re also good at cultivating cheese. It’s gross but true. An exhibition in Dublin displayed a variety of cheeses made with bacteria samples obtained from real people’s feet, armpits, and belly buttons. YUCK!

Our big toe used to be used as a thumb. Today, if you lose your thumb, your big toe can be transplanted in its place.

There is an actual job that requires you to sniff people’s feet (and armpits). Madeline Albrecht worked for an Ohio lab that tests Dr. Scholl products. In the 15 years that she held this job, she sniffed more than 5,600 feet and untold numbers of armpits. Albrecht currently holds the Guinness World Record for the number of feet and armpits sniffed.
