If you’ve never seen a Narwhal, then you are in for a real surprise – this mammal has a big long tusk that looks like a horn. In fact, the Narwhal is nicknamed “the unicorn of the sea.”

• The Narwhal is in the whale family.
• It can weigh from 13 to 20 feet long and weigh up to 1.5 tons.
• This mammal is well-known for its long spiraled tooth. Males (and occasionally the females) of this species grow them.
• Each tooth-tusk can measure up to 9 feet long and can weigh over 22 pounds.
• Narwhal’s do not have dorsal fins, so they can travel very easily under the ice.
• This mammal also has a flexible neck, which allows it to turn very quickly.

Scientists are still searching for why the Narwhal has this mysterious tusk. The males do use them as swords to battle other males for the attentions of the females.

But the tusk is more than just a weapon. It is packed full of nerves and is covered in tiny holes. These holes allow seawater to enter and allow the animal to detect changes in the sea water. These clues may help the Narwhal hunt for food.
