What Do You See, Chickadee?

The Black-capped Chickadee is an adorable little bird with a big personality. Depending on where you live, you may have these spunky birds in your yard.

True to its name, the Black-capped Chickadee has a black patch covering its head and a large black patch under its beak.

The Chickadee can make at least 15 different calls. The most common is the one that sounds like its name – chick-a-dee-dee-dee. Click below to hear its signature call.

This little bird lives in the woods, cotton fields, thickets, groves, parks, and cities.

The Chickadee measures about 5 to 6 inches in length. Its wingspan is 6 to 8 inches in length.

This bird will hide food for later. It can remember where its stash is for up to a month.

During the breeding season, the Chickadees brain gets bigger. This enables it to create more sounds.

The Chickadee loves to dine on insects, spiders, larvae, weevils, and slugs.

The female Chickadee will lay up to 8 eggs. They are small and marked with fine reddish-brown spots.
