The Arctic Hare is the biggest species of hare. It can weigh up to 12 pounds (5.4 kg)!

This rabbit changes color with the seasons. It is mostly white in the winter and grey or grey-brown in the summer months. Changing color helps the hare blend in with its habitat. This keeps it safe from predators.

The Arctic Hare lives within the Arctic Circle. This region is located in the far northern parts of Canada (including Baffin Island, Ellesmere Island and other Arctic Islands) and Greenland. It is also found further south, on the Canadian island of Newfoundland, which is part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Arctic Hare is a herbivore. This means it eats plants. Since the land is frozen and hard in the Arctic, this hare eats mostly a tiny wooden plant called the Dwarf Willow. It also eats moss, lichen, and leftover prey such as caribou and fish.

Baby hares are called “leverets.” They are born with fur and can already see.
