It’s Frankenstein Friday! Let’s Celebrate!

Frankenstein is the story about a mad scientist who brings the dead back to life. This scary tale continues to be one of our lasting horror stories today.

In honor of the green-faced character, Frankenstein Friday is celebrated the last Friday of October – that’s today!

Let’s discover more about Frankenstein.

Did You Know?

  • The story of Frankenstein was written 200 years ago. It was published in 1818.
  • The author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, was only 18 years old when she penned this famous book.
  • The idea for Frankenstein came to Mary in a dream…

“I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life…

He sleeps, but he is awakened; he opens his eyes; behold, the horrid thing stands at his bedside, opening his curtains and looking on him with yellow, watery, but speculative eyes.”

  • Frankenstein is not the name of the monster in Mary’s book. Victor Frankenstein is the name of the mad scientist. The monster had no official name.
  • Frankenstein is the name of a Castle in Germany. It means “Stone of Franks.” Mary visited this castle on one of her journeys. Perhaps it contributed to the name in her book.
  • Critics did not like this story when it first came out. They called it, “horrible, disgusting, and absurd.”

Today, Frankenstein (the monster) is still a favorite Halloween costume for both kids and adults.
