What would the holidays be without the candy cane? They are great to decorate with and as a delicious treat.

• If you turn the candy cane upside down, it resembles a “J.” Many people believe this represents Jesus.
• Candy canes are very old. The first one was made over 350 years ago!
• The original candy cane was straight and all white. The red stripes were added around 1900.
• Over 1.2 billion candy canes are manufactured each year. Most of these (90%) are sold a few weeks before Christmas.
• This candy is usually peppermint flavored. However, some candy canes are now available in all flavors like cherry, and strawberry.
• The world’s largest candy cane was built by Geneva, Illinois chef Alain Roby in 2012.  It was 51 feet long, and contained about 900 pounds of sugar! It was eventually smashed up with a hammer so people could take home a piece.

How do you eat your candy canes? That answer may depend on whether you’re a girl or a boy.

Studies show that 54% of kids suck on candy canes, while 24% just go right for the big crunch. As you may have been able to guess, of those surveyed, boys were nearly twice as likely to be “crunchers.”
