Did you know?

• Reindeer are closely related to the caribou. They are found in the Arctic and Subarctic regions.
• This large mammal has “smart” feet. In the summer months, the pads of its feet are sponge-like. This gives it extra traction for the soft tundra. In the winter, the pads shrink and tighten. This exposes the rim of the hoof, which cuts into the ice and snow.
• Female reindeer grow antlers, too!
• Reindeer shed their antlers. But they don’t go to waste. Rodents and other animals devour this healthy (and tasty) treat.
• Reindeer can withstand chilly temperatures because they have hollow coats. This traps the air and keeps the animal cozy.
• Reindeer are excellent swimmers.
• Within 90 minutes after being born, the baby reindeer can run.
• Reindeer can stand up to 4 feet (1.2 m) at the shoulder. They can weigh around 460 pounds (210 kg).
• This animal likes to dine on vegetation and mushrooms.
