Fiery Fact # 1 – Bucket Brigade

Benjamin Franklin was responsible for the first firefighters in Philadelphia. They were known as Benjamin Franklin’s Bucket Brigade. Each month these dedicated people would meet to discuss new and better ways to fight a fire.

Fiery Fact # 2 – Hours of Training

Since being a firefighter takes skill, each person must do 100 hours of training before they can enter into a burning building.

Fiery Fact # 3 – Quick Change

Like a superhero, firefighters must get dressed on the fly. In less than two minutes the firefighter has to put on all that gear. After all, every minute counts!

Fiery Fact # 4 – Heavy Haulin’

How much does a firefighter’s gear weigh? From 60 to 120 pounds! Now that’s some heavy haulin.’

Fiery Fact # 5 – Seeing “Spots”

Why were Dalmatians used in firefighting? This spotted pooch got along well with horses (which were used to pull the firefighting carriages). This dog was also used to guard the gear while the firefighter was busy putting out the flames. Plus, this active dog had no problem running alongside and keeping up with the carriage.

Fiery Fact # 6 – Fighters Galore

As of 2007, there were approximately 1,148,800 firefighters in the United States alone. Most of these men and women are volunteers.

Fiery Fact # 7 – First Female Firefighter

Molly Williams was the first woman to become a firefighter in New York City in 1815. She was also the first African American to serve in this important role.

Fiery Fact # 8 – Trucks, Trucks, and More Trucks

There are three types of fire trucks;

• Pumper Truck – about 30 feet long and uses fire hydrants to fight the fire.
• Tanker Truck – also about 30 feet long and can carry up to 1,000 gallons of water.
• Ladder Truck – 40 to 50 feet long and carries an extension ladder on top.
