The next morning, three young children and their parents joyfully received a Golden Retriever puppy into their household. He became their ‘forever’ dog and they all lived happily ever after!

The Gorgeous ‘Golden

Standing at a medium size of 22-24 inches tall and weighing 55-75 pounds, the ‘Golden’ is a beautiful and contributing member of the family. ‘Goldens’ are eager to please. If you have a ‘Golden’ as a pet, be careful not to leave him too long alone or he will get sad. This breed of dog needs lots of affection and attention. They have a life span of 10-12 years.

But the Golden Retriever also loves to work. They are classed in the Sporting Dogs category, along with Labrador Retrievers, Irish and English Setters, and Cocker Spaniels. Their qualities of sensitive smell, patience and persistence make them excellent for Search and Rescue, or Drug Detection dogs.

Story of the First Golden Retriever

His Lordship bought a dog named ‘Nous’ from a cobbler (shoemaker). ‘Nous’ was the only yellow dog from a litter of black Wavy-Coated Retrievers. Lord Tweedmouth took him home to his other dog, a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. Of course, ‘Nous’ and Belle fell in ‘dog-love’. They produced ‘Crocus, ‘Cowslip’ and ‘Primrose’, three golden-yellow puppies, which were the first Golden Retrievers.
